Everyone feels the stress every now and again, whether that’s from work, the kids, or just the stressors of modern life. Whilst there are a range of steps that you can take to relieve stress, aromatherapy is one that has stood the test of time.

Today, aromatherapy is coming back into the public eye, and aromatherapy candles for stress relief are extremely popular simply because they are so easy to use. All you need to do is put the candle in a safe location, light it, get comfy, and relax.

Do candles for stress relief really work?

In a word, yes.

Aromatherapy may be considered an alternative or holistic medicine, but studies have shown that there are certain smells that can be of benefit to people’s mental health by offering relief from anxiety, depression, and stress. The current situation in the world means stress levels are at an all-time high, and as a result, taking the time to relax and unwind is more important than ever, and aromatherapy candles can really help.

Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years, and was used by ancient cultures in China, Egypt, and India. Natural substances derived from plants have always been used for medicinal and religious purposes as they were known to have physical and psychological benefits.

Aromatherapy works by targeting the brain’s scent receptors. As you breathe in the scent, it travels through your nose, triggering the parts of the brain responsible for calming you down. Aromatherapy can work quite quickly, making it perfect for just-home-from-work stress relief.

When it comes to choosing candles specifically for stress relief, you want to opt for candles that contain natural and pure essential oils. All five candles in Calon Candles’ Aromatherapy candle range use only pure essential oils in combination with 100% natural, vegan wax for a clean burning handmade luxury candle.

Essential oils

Traditional aromatherapy is based on essential oils, and these same oils are used in aromatherapy candles. The oils tend to come from the plants themselves, and they are distilled and extracted from the plant’s seeds, roots, leaves, or blossoms depending on the plant. Essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, ylang-ylang, rose, and mint are all synonymous with relaxation and stress relief.

When it comes to candles, aromatherapy works in the same way. Essential oils are mixed in with the wax when the candle is made, and as the candle burns and the wax melts, your room fills with essential oils that you can breathe in and benefit from.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is good for the respiratory system. If you are stressed, you’ll notice that you start taking shallower breaths than normal. Breathing in eucalyptus can encourage you to breathe deeper, calming you down. Spearmint works in a very similar way, only it has the added benefit of boosting your mood and ability to focus.

Our Uplift aromatherapy candle contains eucalyptus, mint, and lemon essential oils, all of which will help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and boost your mood. If lemon isn’t really for you, our Smile aromatherapy candle combines eucalyptus and mint with bold orange notes.

Lavender

Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils, and it’s easy to see why. Lavender promotes relaxation, which is why you will often find it in things that aim to help you sleep or relieve anxiety. Some people have reported that lavender can even help alleviate headaches, relieve menstrual cramps, eczema, and more. Lavender can be used for so many different things that in the world of essential oils and aromatherapy, it’s considered to be a multipurpose oil.

Our Rest aromatherapy candle combines the relaxing notes of lavender with refreshing citrus, orange, and eucalyptus. The four essential oils we’ve packed into this one handmade luxury candle combine to promote the ultimate in relaxation, helping you unwind after a tough day.

Ylang-Ylang

Ylang-ylang has a sweet aroma with spicy undertones. This floral essential oil is said to help relaxation, build self-esteem, and can even act as an aphrodisiac. This essential oil is often combined with other floral scents that enhance the anxiety-relieving nature of ylang-ylang.

As an example, our Calm aromatherapy candle combines ylang-ylang with green florals and sweet geranium for a rich, woody scent.

If you prefer a fruitier fragrance, our Unwind aromatherapy candle combines ylang-ylang with a burst of fresh blackberry. Both handmade luxury candles will fill your room with the delightful scent of ylang-ylang and help to burn your troubles away.
